Preparation

Dogs need to follow a long and demanding preparation before taking the start of a race.

A marathon takes planning

It is obvious that one does not get involved in running a marathon without preparing well in advance. And of course the same goes for a sled dog. Like any true sportsman, he needs to train. Preparation is carefully studied in order to bring the dog to his top shape for the race.
In addition to training, the dog benefits from a special diet. This sports nutrition is adapted to the dog and the effort he will to provide. A lot of care and resources are needed from the musher to bring his team to the highest level.

The basics of performance

Four inseparable elements condition the physical performance of a sled dog: genetics, the psychological relationship between man and dog, training and nutrition.
In contrast to other major domestic animal species, the dog has not been concerned yet by the revelation of the methods and techniques for genetic improvement. However, genetic selection remains a fundamental pillar of performance, and it is still based on the experience of each musher.

Physical training is also essential. Dogs being true athletes, training has become very specific and increasingly appeals to a regular medical and sporting follow up from a veterinarian.
