Origin

The first trails of dogs harnessed to a sled are over 4000 years old. They were found on the East side of Siberia, close to the well known Bering sea.  But it is only in the 20th century that the dog sled becomes a real sport.

During the 90’s the “gold rush” occurs in Canada and Alaska. Gold-diggers are using dogs teams to travel in snowy and cold weather. Jack London describes them perfectly in his famous books Croc-Blanc (White Fang) and L’appel de la forêt (The Call of the Wild). But many adventurers could never find any gold at all. In order to keep themselves busy, they create groups of dog lovers.

They decide to compare their dogs teams on their endurance and speed. That’s how a new sport appeared, maybe the most beautiful there is.

But before all this, Eskimos, trappers, storekeepers, postmen, explorers, missionaries, and above all the Canadian police, widely use sled dogs.
