Transport

Bring dogs at the start of the race and accommodate them is not an easy task.

Accommodate and transport the dogs

When we see a team on the slop, we understand that the equipment is very important: sleds, harnesses or neckline are still in progress.

Duringthe race, we rarely see the elements of the daily life’s dogs.

Know and prevent dog behavior

The kennels: For the comfort of dogs, it is important that a kennel is well conceived. Indeed, sled dogs are hounds who like to live in group.

But at the same time, the musher do not allow them to live all together, because in this instance, the behavior of the pack will immediately get back and dogs will regularly fight to establish the hierarchy of the strongest. Courtyards, boxes, kennels are designed to respect the constraints of dog behavior, but also ensure that they have a healthier.

Suitable vehicles

To transport the dogs in training or at departure of a race, mushers must arrange their vehicle. Depending on the numbers of dogs, it will be an all-terrain vehicle, a "pickup" or even a truck or trailer equipped.

But it will be reflected: ventilation of the boxes or cages, diversion of engine exhaust to avoid the risk of gas poisoning, easy cleaning…

In the U.S., Canada and Scandinavia, it is common to find large "4x4" which allow to safely transporting 30 dogs. Many mushers are also educating in mechanics, because when the temperature drops, the diesel engine filters can freeze!
